If you are one of those people who spend the first month of the New Year twiddling your thumbs, because business is slow. Well now is the ideal time to re-evaluate your website. In this post I look at some of the things worth considering for 2024.

Redesign

If you have had your website for a few years now, and not done much to the look of it, the chances are it will begin to look a little bit dated. Technology is moving so fast on the web that it is not always viable to keep bang up to date. However, it is important not to get left behind while your competitors get new e-commerce sites or cater to the ever-increasing use of mobile devices.

Your website is like a shop front and you need to keep the windows clean, the display dust free and contemporary, and the paint work looking fresh.

Make the website suitable for mobile

As once again the top selling items this Christmas have been Smartphones and Tablets, it is really time to consider making your website mobile friendly. There are a number of ways of doing this. The two main ones are creating a whole new site for mobile or making your current website responsive. I would suggest going along the responsive route as creating a separate site means more to maintain. Responsive Design is where your current website adjusts its width and layout based on the screen size of the device you are viewing it on.

Improve Conversion Rate

So you’ve spent years getting your website positioned well in search listings. You pay a small fortune in Pay Per Click advertising. Now, in the New Year you need to look at turning more of those visitors into conversions.

Conversion Rate Optimisation (CRO) is the process of analysing what visitors do on your website. Then improve your content, design or structure based on your collected data. There are a number of tools out there to help you with this, such as Google Analytics, Cro Monitor, Mouse Flow and ClickTale.

Improve your content

Content is key; it is what the search engines use to find your website. If you’ve been a bit lax in keeping your content up to date, now is the time to review it. The first thing is, to look through the content you already have on the website and check:

  • Is it necessary (check how many people are actually visiting the page)
  • Is it current (make sure the content isn’t referring to something that you no longer provide)
  • Are there any spelling or grammatical mistakes (I’m the worst for this, but it is a good idea to get someone to proof read your content)
  • Can you make you key points at the top of the page (most people won’t read all your lovely content, so can you help them out by giving them what they need right at the top of the page.)

The Second thing is, to add new content for things you provide but aren’t yet telling anyone about.

Start a Blog

This is the resolution that you are going to find the hardest to keep going. So unless you are going to buy a gym membership for the whole year, don’t bother. Blogs are great for creating new content for SEO and getting new people to your website, however you do need to post on a regular basis, at least once a month. So note down all the key dates for your business in 2024 and start thing about what you can write for them. Keep on top of any news relating to your business and get a blog post out expressing your opinion.
